Sop It To Me! (appearing in SHE Caribbean 2011)

Standard

Who’s the Sop in your relationship? Contenders take your positions. Pilaiye Cenac attempts to determine a victor or um…victress.

It’s a competitive world; there are so many titles to vie for — even in relationships! There is competition for the position of better half, the one and only, the significant other, the one who wears the pants in the relationship, etcetera, etcetera. Another designation worthy of contending for –- the Top Sop!

A sop is a hopeless romantic, a lovey-dovey, sentimental, affectionate, touchy-feely, mushy individual. Sops have the power to inspire the formation of groups such as ‘The Society of Manly Men and Womanly Women Against Soppy Statuses on Facebook’ and ‘Mushy, Lovey-Dovey Status Haters!!!!’ But they’re lovers, not haters. Sops can be born or made, male or female, closeted or flagrantly so. Instructions for dealing with them include Fragile, Handle With Care, Do Not Crush/Drop.

Few men would covet this title (even if they deserve it); therefore, we need a more macho-sounding title to motivate your partner to take this quiz with you. Call him over to complete this to determine your individual Standard Operating Protocol (tee hee). And if he hesitates or resists when you ask, promise him ‘something nice’ for his participation—that oughta work!

Are you done? Who won? Well…let me assume the role of the eternal optimist and referee: if you scored in the same bracket, birds of a feather flock together; if you didn’t, opposites attract. If he won this SOP assessment, make sure you deliver on the promise made earlier or promptly locate that valve to try to stop the impending waterworks!
